Les Trois Inventeurs (1980) by Michel Ocelot

Friday, 3 February 2012

Michel Ocelot is a French writer, character designer, storyboard artist and director of animated films and television programs (he also has directed a music video for Bjork). Ocelot was the former president of the International Animated FIlm Association. I came across this gem entitled 'Les Trois Inventeurs' yesterday in internet land. The entire short film was created out of paper cut outs in 1980* and according to this article, tells the story of: "In a world of white lace, an inventive man, an inventive woman, and an inventive little girl invent beautiful and useful machines. But people don’t understand and get angry when things are not like they used to be". The animation was the winner of best animated short at the 34th British Academy Film Awards, Zagreb World Festival of Animated Films in 1980 and Odense Film Festival in 1981. I am convinced Mr Ocelot is a genius! The short is a pure work of art and although it is completely in French, the story and the visuals translate almost naturally. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Bon week-end tout le monde! (Happy weekend to all!)
*Please bare in mind that this animation is over thirty year old, the quality is poor, however the story is so beautiful.
