My weekend - Mummenschanz

Wednesday, 2 March 2011

So on Sunday, I overdosed on flu meds and dragged my poor sister to the State Theatre in Pretoria, to watch a matinee performance of the Swiss theatre group Mummenschanz.

Ok let me firstly admit I had no clue or ever heard of Mummenschanz before. To me it looks like an Austrian strudel or German swear word. I assure you it is neither. I have to credit the hype created in the feed on Facebook, with many of my friends raving after seeing the performance.

Basically Mummenschanz are a group of actors which transform everyday objects into fantastical creatures without the use of music, language, sounds or special effects. The group use material such as toilet paper, masking tape, plastic bags and cardboard boxes to transform  themselves on stage. It was a magical experience. I would recommend the show to everyone as it is truly spectacular and breathtaking! There is a surprise twist at the end that is also worth seeing! You can find out more information at: http://www.mummenschanz.com/

The group will be performing at:

  • Pretoria SA State Theatre (22-27 February 2011)
  • Cape Town Baxter Theatre (1 - 19 March 2011)
  • Port Elizabeth PE Opera House (29 March - 3 April 2011)
  • Durban The Playhouse (6-10 April 2011)
  • Johannesburg Joburg Theatre (12-17 April 2011)

It is! Its so crazy. Turns out all the actors are super old-like silver backs! Makes you have hope for when we're grey haired!
